Code Review
This pull request introduces a performance improvement by caching the results of pandoc conversions using functools.lru_cache. It also refines the logic to intelligently bypass pandoc for simple text containing snake_case identifiers, which further enhances performance. The accompanying tests are updated to reflect these changes and ensure correctness. Overall, this is a solid improvement. I have one minor suggestion for code cleanup.

The explicit str() conversions for text and source_format are redundant. The rst function's signature already defines text as a str, and source_format has a default string value and is also typed as str. Removing these explicit conversions will make the code slightly cleaner.
