I slightly modified the original template to try to remove as much distraction from the main paper as possible.
I broke many things in the process, but I hope @agahkarakuzu and @SamGuay can help making the template legit again : )

The design looks amazing @r03ert0 ! I am most favorable to monochromatic layouts, and to color them is really easy.
I took the liberty to organize the code a little bit, but the design was (almost) kept as you proposed.

One thing I changed that has a great visual impact is the alignment of the main text: justified alignment w hyphenation. If you have an opinion about that, please let me know! My motivation is to keep the text in a square shape, reducing the cognitive load from lines with different widths.

In general, it is better to keep a shorter column, since the eyes need to move a greater length when the content is full-width. To fill the space with TOC is a good idea, is it possible to extract with pandoc or similar to a JSON format?

The mobile version definitely needs work, but would it be better to focus on the desktop now and add the proper bootstrap classes and media selectors in another PR? To keep things reasonable to assess.

One last thing that my modifications comprise is to include numbers linking authors and affiliations (sorry for my narcissism):
