A new cran release?

Hi @randy3k, nice to hear from you. The recent work was simply initiated as I wanted to try the latest copilot on this project and see how far it could go. I just helped discover some bugs and did some debugging. Most of the code was written by copilot, which is quite impressive.

I use the latest master in my work for quite a while and it looks smooth. I guess it is ready for a new release if you also agree.
